What is the world of a manager?
Every person sees “his world” in a different way. For developers, the world is a PC, for a construction worker, the world is brick and mortar. There they get specific possibilities and opportunities to solve problems.
The hunting woods is the world of the hunter, the mountains belong to the climbers, the intellectual lives in a world of perception, of ideas and logical associations. In part, we all build our own world, but we are also created by.
But what is the world of a manager ?
This was is made out of markets, requests and offers. The markets can be:
- Resources (water, energy etc)
The above, of course, is not something new but with new times new challenges appear and that is great news for managers and the way that we want to change the world
The explosive growth of the markets create a whole lot of opportunities.
- In 1950 there were 2.5 billion people
- In 1999 there were 6 billion people
- In 2060 there will be 12 billion people
- This provides us with:
- 6.6 billion of potential employees
- 6.6 billion of potential customers!
- This provides us with:
- In the 19th century – the century of the industrial revolution there were 4000 inventions – 40 per year
- Today we have a new invention every day! In the entire world, yearly, there are more than 1 million patents created.
Because of new ways of doing things, everything is much more easy and fast in our days.
I’ll give you some examples on how we compare to the past
- Photography – 1727-1839 – 112 years
- Phone – 1820-1876 – 56 years
- Radar – 1925-1940 – 15 years
- Computers – doubling of performances at least once per year
The experience and discovery that happened yesterday are already old today and tomorrow they will be completely outdated; everything is happening with an accelerated speed.
Today we have computers and the Internet and because of that way of communication we can easily reach any place on earth almost instantly
Today we have less time then any generation before us
Because of new technologies of communication, people that work in an industry know almost everything about the competition. The managers from today have much more possibilities then their colleagues, the managers from yesterday. The potential of new ideas is practically infinite (90% of all scientist of the planet are working during our times)
Use your time! – Time-management
And the time is passing by fast. We do not have much time in relation to the possibilities that are offered. Also we do not have enough time to handle every pressure that come from the markets. Life offers us this immense opportunity not only to us, but to everybody, so be careful to catch those opportunities !
The gap between what we know and what we should know widens continuously (we would need about 1000 years to read all the business publications that appear in a year!)
The volume of information doubles every year. Isn’t it obvious, that in this conditions, that the activity of a lot of managers, under the pressure of reaching the objectives, is more of a fire extinguish attitude, improvised from one day to the next ?
Managers in the imperfect world
We, the managers have the tasks to do much more and as good as possible with imperfect information.
The managers that only complain about the imperfection of people or the company do not understand their role. Those who do not see the imperfection do not know their job. To do the maximum possible with something imperfect is not a problem, but our opportunity!
Another task of managers is to make sure that the wheels are turning, that hands and brains are always on the move and that people work together and NOT one against each other.
In this imperfect world, managers have 3 relationships that they need to focus on
- Relationship with the people – that are put on the move
- Relationship with information – that will be transformed into decisions
- Relationship with time – that is used to put people on the move and transform information into decisions
Relationship with the people
A managers is a “center of energy” in the structure of an organisation. The purpose is to influence other people to steer them into the right direction.
What Rockefeller says means a lot as he was a pragmatic finance guy, not a fan of psihology.
Relationship with the information
The art of working with information is not to collect as much data as possible, but to differentiate clearly between what is important and what is not. This is an art!
Relationship with time
How can we plan and use our time best?
How can we avoid becoming a slave of our work and to the hole amout of possiblities ?
Managers can change the world
What is the purpose of a manager ? What is his responsibility ? What is the difference between a manager and other employees ?
We will try to give you some answers to the questions.
Managers take decisions – as well as other. They check – but they are not alone. They motivate – but that is what teachers and sellers do. They plan – but so do project managers.
But what can we say is a tasks only for managers ?
Managers exist on the world just to initiate changes and to assure that those are done. If there were no changes to be made, if there were no changes that needed to get the reaction of companies and organisations, then managers would be almost useless.
It would be enough to have the specialist of each department, doing stuff as per the rules, traditions and indication or pre-programmed decisions.
The managers are there to make sure that something new is happening, despite the day-to-day tasks, pre-conceived ideas, fear of the unpredictable future.
Managers are there to change the world. They have to do it with efficiency. They develop their companies from small business to multinational companies competing on the international markets. If they do not do that, they would go bankrupt (did you know that from the 500 top USA companies that existed in 1955 only 64 where there in 1999 ?)
This was only a brief introduction to what tasks a manager has to do to be productive and efficient.
What else do you think a manager should do ? Would love to read your comments.
